1, 2 Phenobarbital has been studied as an alternative or adjunct to benzodiazepines with encouraging results, but primarily among inpatient services. What They Did: Retrospective cohort study at a single academic medical center between July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019. Long half-life could obviate the need for discharge medications.

Another trial suggests that two weeks of treatment performed similarly to 4 weeks (Ulleryd, 2003). Other studies in afebrile men with UTI have been observational and suggested that longer-duration therapy was not associated with any benefit (Ulleryd, 2003). Conducted at 2 US Veterans Affairs medical centers from 2012–2019.
