Radiationoncology continues to experience workforce challenges, but radiology departments and medical schools can help spur interest in the specialty, according to an article published January 30 in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. The year 2023 showed a continued decline in applicants with 37 unmatched positions.
Radiology and radiationoncology are among the top 10 highest average annual compensation medical specialties, according to a May 23 report by Doximity. Radiology and radiationoncology are not immune from these challenges. The report found that the two specialties range between $500,000 and $600,000 in compensation.
In the work ahead, these groups will define the levels and roles for each step in the radiation therapy and medical dosimetry career pathway. ASRT workgroups are also focused on creating intersocietal efforts that raise awareness of multiple roles within radiology and radiationoncology.
